Public nursing colleges needed a practical way to enhance the functionality of rigid training manikins in simulation labs, aiming to prepare nursing students better to identify neurological dysfunction and reduce risks to patients in clinical settings.
The Solution: A research pilot was conducted using an interactive prototype to test the effectiveness of augmented reality (AR) in simulating neurological conditions on existing manikins. The AR projections were viewed through iPads already available in the simulation labs.
The pilot showed that AR Neuro Simulator proved to be an effective, cost-efficient solution that improved students' ability to recognize neurological dysfunction and respond more quickly in a lab environment, better equipping them for clinical practice.
Why this works: Being able to witness neurological symptoms in real-time simulated environment increases response time once in clinical settings, lowering risk of harm for patients and reducing liability for universities and hospitals.
Stats: During pilot study with 25 nursing students, post-evaluation showed 100% of nursing students felt that they could benefit from AR Neuro Simulation.
